Charles Frederick Smith born c. 1874 Hampshire
« on: Friday 05 May 23 17:36 BST (UK) »
Charles Frederick Smith m Mary Rachel Pointer, 1902 in Southampton (JunQ 2C/28). Mary's full name is Mary Ann Hannah Rachel Pointer.   A son, Edward Charles Smith, was born in 1907 (South Stoneham 2C/74).   Charles, senior,  died in 1908 aged 34 (born about 1874).

The marriage in 1902 and death in 1908 is betweeen census records.

Having already found more about Mary I now want to find the parents and earlier history of Charles' family.   A certificate for the  Charles/Mary marriage would hopefully show the father of Charles but am I missing another way?

Grateful for help, please

I would get the marriage certificate first to see the name and occupation of his father it Will also give you the names of the witnesses and where Charles was living at the time of His marriage also his occupation which will help with finding him on census records

As you don’t know his fathers name - are you assuming he was born in Hampshire because he married there or do you have any other documentary proof he was born there?

There is only 1 Hampshire birth on freebmd for his name /possible birthyear - Portsea

June qtr 1873 - mothers maiden name Capon. IGNORE - SEE REPLY BELOW

There is an 1859 marriage in Portsea with a William Smith & Georgina Gates Capon on the same page

Given the commonality of his surname & if Hampshire is an assumption - you need the 1902 marriage cert

Ignore that 1873 birth & 1859 marriage.  That George Frederick is with mother Georgina in 1911 & still single

Thanks for your helpful replies and yes, as a wild card I was assuming a Hampshire birth.  I will get the  marriage certificate and hope I can progress from there.

Hello again, I now have a copy of the marriage certificate.

Married 8th May 1902, Parish Church of St Luke's, Southampton.
Groom: Charles Frederick Smith age 28 (c.1874) Bachelor, Fireman, (looks like 88 Millbar Street, father Frederick Charles Smith, Firemen.
Bride: Mary Rachel Pointer age 28 (c.1874) Spinster, profession ruled through, looks like 2 Anncaster Road, father Henry Pointer, Fireman
Witness: William Del......Hall and Ada Florence Hall.

As shown above the bride has 4 christian names   1891 Census under Mary, 1901 Census under Rachel.   She was a left a widow in 1908 and did not marry  again.   Using a combination of names I  have not found a record of her death.   I have Mary's early history and now want to find more about her husband,

I would like to find more about about Charles Frederick Smith.   His father's name is now known and both father and son are recorded as Firemen.    I've tried Family Search without success and would be grateful for help
