Baptismal records - Traynor - Hull
« on: Sunday 07 May 23 13:10 BST (UK) »
I am hoping to find baptismal records for the Traynor children, one of whom was my great grandfather, in the hope of discovering who their sponsors/god-parents were, which might suggest other family members.  The family was Catholic (or at least dad was & the children were raised as Catholic) & lived in the Holy Trinity/Sculcoates area of Hull.  I have all the census details for the family.
The info I have is as follows: Francis Traynor (b c 1836 Ireland, d 1896 Hull) married Rebecca Longfield (b 1843 Hull - d 1942 Hull) 1866 Sculcoates.
Children : Annie Elizabeth (1867-1943); Mary (2 Feb 1868-1902); William Bernard (31 Dec 1870-1954); Alice Longfield (1873-1875); Joseph Robert (Jan 1875-1877); Ada Denton (16 Jul 1877-1960); Robert Longfield (16 Feb 1880-1933); John Longfield (Oct 1882-1956).
The ideal scenario would be that one of the sponsors is a Traynor & thus a relative of Francis but I suspect he came alone from Ireland to England so am not very hopeful.  Worth a try!
Thank you in advance to anyone able to help.

I see that Francis gives a birthplace of Belfast in 1871.

Following on from Trish's comment, you should really purchase the marriage certificate if you haven't already.

Hi Trish & Queenie
I have the marriage certificate & at the time of marriage to Rebecca - 1866 - Francis is a flax dresser.  His father Bernard is a farmer, deceased.  Francis does not appear in the 1861 census for England so am assuming he came here between 1861 & 1866.  I cannot find any Irish records that I can be certain refer to my Francis or Bernard so am scratching around for anything I can find from after his arrival. ( I am also looking at the naming patterns of his children to try to ascertain Francis’ parents’ names & have two potential birth matches for Francis in Ireland but no mother’s maiden name on either & first names are the same as names in Rebecca’s family). 😕
Although the 1871 census gives Francis’ place of birth as Belfast, the obituary of his son (William Bernard) says his father was from Monaghan (a Traynor stronghold) although I will not discount Belfast entirely.
Thank you both for engaging!  Francis has been eluding me for decades & I keep trying to approach from different angles.

I am probably famous on here for saying this now, but have you considered DNA? I would definitely recommend testing via Ancestry if you are eager to pursue this further. My Irish father has a lot of matches on there and it helped me go back another generation when I was unsure. Obviously there is no guarantee, but it is worth a punt. If nothing else, hopefully it could confirm the Monaghan angle (assuming that you do not believe you have any other ancestors from that area). Even better if you can find an older family member (i.e. parent, aunt/uncle) who is a generation closer who agrees to test.

I can actually only see 1 Francis Traynor with a father called Bernard in Monaghan in the right timeframe. That is, the one baptised 17th March 1837 in Errigal Trough. What other match have you found?

Queenie
There is another birth - 6 Feb 1836, to Bernard & Elizabeth, with a sibling (Mary) in 1839.  I am trying to find connections with the sponsors for all of these births but the records are so patchy.
I have dna tested on Ancestry (& uploaded to Gedmatch, FTDNA, MyHeritage), even started an Ancestor Project on Gedmatch, but nothing concrete.  Have several direct male descendants of Francis, 3rd & 4th cousins, none of whom will test.  Very frustrating !

May be just a coincidence but there is a Bernard Traynor born c 1841 Ireland, living in Linthorpe 1881 Census.
Cant seem to find him on any other Census.
Possible Brother for Francis?

Hmm - age would be about right if naming patterns were followed & Francis was first or second son.  Shame he’s not married.  I will keep an eye out for him elsewhere. Thanks Trish.
