WW1 1914/15 Star ?
« on: Sunday 07 May 23 14:21 BST (UK) »
Distant Relatives of this Soldier believe he was awarded the 1914/15 Star with the Argyll and Sunderland Highlanders
He Died of his Wounds 2 May 1918 as Pte 301303 Duncan McIsaac aged 20
They maintain the Photo is him wearing his 1914/15 Ribbon
But he would have been 16 in 1914/15
And therefore enlisted at 15 then Training
There are only 3 Medal Cards for Soldiers named Duncan in any Regt
Only one was awarded the Star which is not the one they think that is their Relative
Any Opinions?
How is he wearing a 14/15 Ribbon before his Death in 1918 ?
Is that Badge and Glengarry correct ?

The medal card for Duncan Isaac shows that his first service number was 3492. A search using both  numbers has failed to find a 1914 or 1914/15 Star Medal being awarded. As Duncan was born in 1898,  he would have been too young for a 1914 Star unless he lied about his age and also his name. I also feel that the same would apply to the 1914/15 Star.

Are the distant relatives sure that the man in the photograph is Duncan -- to me, the photo is of a man several years older than a 15 to 17 year old.

Thanks for your Input
Same thoughts as mine.
The Relatives state they remembered handling his Star
They wouldn't confirm where this Newspaper photo is from
I think their Research has mixed up another Soldier the same Name.

I have found a record which shows that he was discharged from hospital (suffering from Ecezma) on the 29 July 1917.
His entry shows that he was 19 years of age and that he had 1 year and 8 months Army service which would give an approximate enlistment date of December 1915. His entry also shows that he had 1 year and 4 months of service 'in the field' -- this would give an approximate date that he entered a theatre of war of March / April 1916.

He could not have qualified for a 1914 or 1914/15 Star Medal.

As I suggested in my first post, the man in the photograph can not be Duncan.

Brilliant AllanUK
All the evidence is Proving he was awarded only the British War Medal and Victory Medal as he went over 1916
The Medal Cards for this Duncan prove that.
No 1914/15 Star or Card for this Duncan as we thought.

Back again with it.
The Family won't have it.
They say they remembered handling his Star
They say his MIC is wrong because it omits the Star 1915
The British War Medal and Victory Medal Card is under 301303
Yet they say they have them under 3492
Does this Card say they were issued under that not the later number if so why ?
Last entry Duncan McIsaac

Can I add in my "chippings" (a mere female who knows very little about the military, other than my grandfather also died in WW1) - that photograph is definitely NOT of an under 20 year-old.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
