I have finally cracked it.
I have finally translated what the Family has been trying to say to me in bad garbled English
On my previous post above " Back again" with the page of those listed with the British War Medal and Victory Medal They knew from the Medal Index Card for the RQMS Thomas Jarrett 3446 301281 got the 1914/15 Star as well

Oh dear!!!  :'(
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

1914–15 Star:

"The 1914–15 Star was instituted in December 1918"

---Duncan McIsaac, He died of his Wounds 2 May 1918

"Like the 1914 Star, the 1914–15 Star was never awarded singly"

---would guess the photo of the soldier with a single medal ribbon is for another award (DCM, MM etc.) and perhaps why his photo is in a newspaper. Which newspaper and date of publication?

The 1914 Star (i.e. awarded to soldiers that were under enemy fire between 5 August 1914 and 22 November 1914) was approved on the 10 November 1917 -- soldiers in the field and other serving soldiers that were entitled to the medal started to receive the ribbon in 1918 -- Duncan could not have been awarded this medal due to his age.

This leaves the 1914/15 Star --

The 14/15 Star was approved in November 1918 with ribbons being issued along with the actual medal. This was after the death of Duncan so the image can not be Duncan McIsaac.

I refer back to Duncan's declaration when he was admitted for medical treatment in July 1917, i.e. that he had been in the Army for 1 year and 8 months and that he had been in a theatre of war for 1 year and 4 months - this gives a date of March / April 1916 when he entered a theatre of war.

I have just finished a deep search of British newspapers for a Duncan (also just the initial 'D') McIsaac (also MacIsaac) with his service numbers and then just with Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders - the result was nothing found. I still maintain that the photograph posted is of a man older than Duncan.

Have you considered that he may have enlisted in 1915 but as the 1/8th Battalion was a Territorial Force, to serve with the Battalion overseas, he would have had to sign the Imperial Service Declaration. It wasn't unknown for men not to sign the IS and then to change their mind at a later date. I feel that this should be considered in Duncan's case, i.e. he didn't sign up for overseas service but changed his mind and then went out in March / April 1916.

The Family keep ask me to Search 1/8th but I don't know what they mean.
They said he was a Boy Drummer and they think he Enlisted pre War
They insist the Photo is him looking old because of what he Endured.
They feel the Ribbon was awarded pre his Death in the Field
They have absolutely no evidence but won't consider they are wrong.
I'm going to give up on this one.
Thanks for your Time
