Having said that, was his Mum Catherine, mn Smith. There is a UK Outward Passenger List departing June 15, 1957 with a Catherine Dempster b. 19-5-1929 headed to Canada with her 2 children, your chap being one and his sister. Catherine gives an address of 5 Douglas Terrace, Annan Rd. Dumfries.

This may be your Catherine with her husband John in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto, Ontario her birth year is out.

Hmm.....scratch Smith as a maiden name. According to her obit it was Gillespie. It also says
b. 1929 which doesn't agree with her headstone.
