Death of John Armstong
« on: Tuesday 09 May 23 14:34 BST (UK) »
i am looking for the death of a John Armstrong b Garrigill/Alston circa 1811 who married Eleanor Armstrong on 16th August 1835 in Haltwhistle.
In 1871 he was a Coal Miner living at Halton lea Gate in Hartley Burn.
He comes up on 'Ancestry' as dying Feb 1873 but this is not guaranteed to be definitive.

If this is your man in 1871
Piece 5155/ folio 18 /page 10

then by the 1881 census his wife (still living in the same place) is listed as a widow.

So he died between 1871 and 1881, Hartleyburn came within Haltwhistle civil registration district

Search Free BMD deaths, John Armstrong, Death age/DOB @1809-1813, died 1871 - 1881 Haltwhistle District

Brings up just 2 results
1 in 1873 age 64 and 1 in 1877 age 65

I'd guess that one of them is your man, but without the death cert I wouldn't like to choose which one

Boo

Back on the case!
Thank you very much Tickettyboo and jonw65 for your responses.
In order to eliminate one of the candidates I am now looking for any details on the John Armstrong who died 29 April 1877 at Knaresdale eg 1871 census information, details of family etc
Look forward to hearing further.

Had a quick look at the civil births on the GRO site for the grandchildren, all entries do not have a mother's maiden name. The youngest, Alfred Pickring Armstrong, looks like his father could be the lodger, Peter Pickring.

Thanks AllanUK.
The same sort of information ie C1871 for the other John Armstrong mentioned in above posts would be most welcome.

Hi
Sorry to go off on another tack, but could that age for the John Armstrong who died in 1873 actually be right?
Trees say he was either the John baptized 15 Nov 1812 at Alston, the son of John & Jane Armstrong, or that his parents were William and Mally/Mary (but possibly this John is still with his parents in Alston in 1851)

There is also this one
John Armstrong
baptism 12 May 1809, Chapelry of Garrigill
Parents Ralph and Elizabeth
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JM5R-R4M

John and Eleanor's first son was called Ralph, first daughter was called Elizabeth.
