Cornfield marriage help please
« on: Tuesday 09 May 23 17:46 BST (UK) »
I was hoping for some help i’m trying to find a marriage for Sarah Insell/Insull to John Cornfield.

I’m guessing they married abt 1863 they have the following children, Mary Ann 1864, Eliza Jane, 1866, Samuel 1868, William 1870, Kate 1875, Mary Jane, 1877 & Daniel 1883 all born in Walsall, Staffordshire mothers maiden name’s spelt Insell, Inston, Ensell, Insull the info’s from the gro.

The family tree’s online have the Mother as Sarah Hinde who married a John cornfield on 10th Aug 1863 Tipton, Stafford (her marriage record says her father’s surnames Wilson) i’m quite confused & pretty much stumped, Any help would be gratefully received thanks.

The 1871 census for John has his place of birth as Cann Lane.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:V5TZ-ZBV

1861 census has a matching John Cornfield with father Samuel, an engineer in Can Lane.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M76W-L8C

So the 1863 marriage in Tipton looks to be correct.

There is a marriage of a John Cornfield to a Sarah Hinde in Tipton, Staffs in 1863.
Looking at the record they are both illiterate, so it is possible Sarah's surname was mangled when it was written down I suppose.

I think the confusion would have been between the names ENSELL and WILSON.

There was a marriage at Wolverhampton in 1833 between William INSELL and Mary RUDGE.  Children that I can see births or baptisms for:

Thomas INSELL baptised 1836

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:N8R5-1JW

ENSELL, WILLIAM
Mother's maiden surname: RUDGE
GRO Reference: 1837  D Quarter in DUDLEY UNION  Volume 18  Page 238

INSULL, SARAH
Mother's maiden surname: RUDGE
GRO Reference: 1843  D Quarter in DUDLEY UNION  Volume 18  Page 274

ENSILL, JOHN
Mother's maiden surname: RUDGE
GRO Reference: 1846  J Quarter in DUDLEY UNION  Volume 18  Page 279

1841 census

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MQRR-WVG

By 1851, Thomas, William and John are distributed amongst their RUDGE relatives, and that might be Sarah in the workhouse as found by Osprey.

Managed to find this on Google Books

(not sure where John Jnr of Cann Lane is related?)

Allan Chace and Other Poems (London: G W Allen) by

John Cornfield jun., exhibits considerable skill in versifying, and not a little real imaginative power.
Whilst the evidence of great original genius in wanting, sufficient proof is afforded of true poetic ability to induce us to advise the author to cultivate the gift that he is so evidencely possess.

I’m not sure if I’m ever going to get anywhere with this it’s a very odd.
I’ve been trying to research her Dad named on the marriage cert William Wilson, occupation engineer the details on the marriage cert could be a mistake or she was illegitimate born Sarah Insull then in childhood took on her stepfather‘s name, so had 2 names because the cert does look correct, known locally as Sarah Hinde, but can’t find any evidence for that theory yet…

Sarah was born between 1845-1847 dates from census, from Marr cert born 1843.

I have 3 Sarah Insull’s born within that time frame & one in 1848.

Sarah born 1843 born Dudley MMN: Rudge
William Insell & Mary Rudge
M.1833 Wolverhampton.

Sarah 1843 Worcester, cant find on GRO Parents are James Insell & Sarah Partridge (marr says Pinchin)

Sarah 1845 born Dudley MMN: Walsh
Henry Insull & Elizabeth Walsh M.1838 Dudley.

Sarah 1848 born Stourbridge MMN: Capewell
Thomas Insull & Hannah Capewell
M.1848 Stourbridge.

I was looking at a granddaughter Sarah living with Copewell’s or Capewell’s but can’t remember the details. i’m going to have another go tomorrow.

I will be looking into the info you have all kindly provided too, would be interested to see if John Cornfield’s is related to the poet!

(I will update if get some actual proof Sarah Insull is Sarah Hinde 🤞)

Thank you.
