Town land not found
« on: Tuesday 09 May 23 22:44 BST (UK) »
Hello all,  I am struggling with town names that I find on the Tithe Applotment records but I can not find in osi.maps.arcgis.com.  These names are not used in the Griffiths records.
The specific ones I am looking for are Tree Lands in Ratoath parish,  Kingsland in Ratoath Parish
Thank you.   Marianne

A belated welcome to RootsChat, Marianne  :)

The original tithe applotments list of townlands for Ratoath parish, Co Meath (1828) has 60 townlands, but by the time of the Griffiths Valuation (1854) this has been reduced to 37 townlands.

Likely that many have been consumed in other townlands - there appear to be no records indicating this.

Thank you,  I believe the Treelands or Freelands is just south of Ratoath going down Fairyhouse Rd.  But I have no idea on Kingsland.
Regards
Marianne

Could Kingsland relate to Barnewall, Viscount Kingsland?.

Have seen mention of Kingsland of Donabate, Co. Dublin. Not Co. Meath but in that general area.

Hi, I was not able to find the same people in Griffiths, to feel like I had any confidence.  But  I did walk through the Tithe Applotment pages one at a time and mapped the approximate order in which the names were recorded.  And compared to current townlands.   I gave Kingland the number 14.

Common 12
Legawinagh (Legagunia) 13
     Kingsland 14  ???
Glascarn 15

Later in the Tithe Applotment I find Kingsland again.
Peacockstown 38
Tankerstown 39
Glascarn (again) 15
    Kingsland 14  ???
Paddocks (again) 8

I don’t know,  maybe if I research Michael Keogh.

Cheers
Marianne

Civil parishes were not static. They could be and were created and changed.

An example is Ballycarney civil parish in Co. Wexford. You won't find it in the tythe valuations, as it did not exist. Similarly, you will find many townlands listed in the tythe valuation for Ferns civil parish that you won't find in Griffith's - because they were now in Ballycarney.

Could this same process be at work here? i.e. a new civil parish created, or townlands transferred to an adjoining parish?

In a similar way, townlands weren't static either - the Ordnance Survey was the official arbiter of what was a townland, and created many. Do the OS letters exist for Meath ?- in which case they should reveal what transpired here. Those that exist are available online.
