Marriage lookup - Thomas Bassett and Elizabeth
« on: Tuesday 09 May 23 23:25 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am trying to locate the marriage of Thomas Bassett and Elizabeth, who were having children in Hinckley from 1794.  It does not appear that this family were those that married in Grendon in 1792, as that family had several children in Polesworth from 1792, which was at the same time as the children who were being baptised to a Thomas and Elizabeth in Hinckley, suggesting two families.

I am thinking that the Hinckley Thomas Bassett may have been born in Great Claybrooke, Leicestershire in 1767 to Richard and Ann.  However I still cannot see another marriage that may tie to the Hinckley couple.

Can anybody help?

Just familiarizing myself with the family.

Thomas Bassett of Hinckley Frame Work Knitter died December 1833 without a will admin granted to his wife Elizabeth  20 January 1834.

Ref Leicestershire Wills and Probate

Pity he didn't leave a will, he might have named a brother in law.

Yes - that is correct.

The Bassetts do not appear to herald from Hinckley although there is a William and Ann Bassett also in Hinckley in the 1790’s - perhaps a brother or even Thomas’ father?

Thomas Basset married Elizabeth Smith by License 16 September 1792.

Does the Warwickshire Records Office have the declarations to be married by license (if they survived)

Hi

That 1792 marriage is the marriage between the Thomas Bassett and Elizabeth at Grendon, they lived in Polesworth, and were having children and baptising them in Polesworth at the same time as the Hinckley couple.  I did see the licence for that 1792 marriage and both of Grendon, with that Thomas a farmer.

The Hinckley Thomas was a framework knitter.

Elizabeth Bassett, buried 18 March 1840, Hinckley
Age 71

Is that her?

Might be a spare marriage, but perhaps not a particularly promising looking one. Date is good though.
6 April 1793, Uffington, Lincolnshire
Thomas Basset + Elizabeth Thurlby

Seemingly no baptisms following in Lincolnshire. Only info about the marriage online seems to be the bare bones from the BT, no idea of the marital status of the couple.

ADDED Distance between Hinckley and Uffington, about 40 miles (as the crow flies)

Thanks - yes that’s Elizabeth Bassetts burial.

The marriage is a puzzle though - Lincolnshire is a possibility although does seem a long way.
