Dicken Hinton
« on: Thursday 11 May 23 10:00 BST (UK) »
Good morning, I have decided for good practice to try and gather together a birth, marriage and death cert for my direct ancestors. Some I have and some others have kindly shared with me. My Gt Gt Grandfather was Dicken Hinton and I have a mar and death cert but no birth cert, and I just can't find the registration. He's fairly easy to search with the first and surname combination (although sometimes transcribed as Dickon or Dickin) in fact I've never come across another Dicken Hinton apart from mine.
He was baptised 02 May 1842 in Ightfield Shropshire, to parents John Hinton and Martha nee Darlington.
His ages on census are
1851 - 8
1861 - 19
1871 - 28
1881 - 38
1891 - 49
1901 - 58
1911 - 69
He died 20 Jan 1920 aged 78 on the death cert
his siblings were mainly registered in Wem and Whitchurch
I have searched the years either side of 1842 but I just can't find him

I have asked this question on a facebook group but still not found him

thank you for reading

The problem might be because birth registrations by the parents were not mandatory until 1874.  Prior to that the onus was often on the registrar to look out and register the child's birth.
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

I’ve also looked at his siblings, and certainly there are excellent candidates for the younger ones. His elder sister Elizabeth is a little more problematic – there is a candidate registration in Q1 1839.

John and Martha married February 1839
Betsy (with correct parents) baptised June 1839

So for this to be the correct birth registration ELizabeth would have been born very close to the marriage but then not baptised for several months.

I note two of his siblings are recorded, might be worth contacting GRO, maybe the record is damaged or they just forgot to register Dicken?

I believe that to be the correct registration, I have Elizabeth baptised 5th April 1839 in Prees to John and Martha Hinton, father John a butcher. I've believed the baptism you mention is the same child, baptised once in her mother's church in Prees and then in her father's in Ightfield. These are the villages they lived in when married.

It seems all the children were registered bar Dicken. The unusual christian name was the maiden name of his father's grandmother
