James Hickmott bc1839-44
« on: Thursday 11 May 23 16:04 BST (UK) »
Looking for details of the origins of a James Hickmott bc1839-44 in Kent prior to 1868 when I know he married Mary Ann Wiles in Bromley. The couple went on to have 12 children between the years 1868 and 1888.

James passed away in 1900 in Bromley so I'm guessing was born there or in one of the surrounding towns or villages but I can't establish exactly where and when.  On his parentage his 1868 Marriage Registration states his father's name as "Samuel" but so far I've been unable to find any matching families in the 1841 -1861 Census Returns.

I'm hoping that as there are a number of Hickmott branches in the Kent area that someone out there may have the details I'm looking for.  Any help appreciated.

Many thanks.

Thanks Queenie that was quick   ;)

So could his birth registration be the 1840 GRO index entry Vol 5 Pg 76 Jan-Mar Cranbrook Union with MMN= Bridger?

I'm thinking he actually went by Henry as a child?:

HICKMOT, HENRY       BORSIMAN
GRO Reference: 1839  J Quarter in LEWISHAM UNION  Volume 05  Page 259

Samuel Hickmott married Susan Berryman on 21st September 1829 in Old Charlton. Susan died in 1841, aged 29.

On the 1841 census, Samuel is living in Ladywell, Lewisham, with his 3 sons, George, Edwin and Henry, and William Bearman. Still in Ladywell in 1851, with George and Henry.

Thanks again Queenie.

Very interesting as I thought James might have the middle name Henry as his 1900 death registration is James H Hickmott.

A James H Hickmott married a Helen Wallace in 1864 but I could find no further record of them. Not sure if it's the same person or a different one??

Very interesting as I thought James might have the middle name Henry as his 1900 death registration is James H Hickmott.

His death registration is under James Henry Hickmott, with an estimated birth year of 1839, which matches perfectly with Samuel and Susan's son. He is also James H. Hickmott on the 1891 census.

A James H Hickmott married a Helen Wallace in 1864 but I could find no further record of them. Not sure if it's the same person or a different one??

Uncertain, if someone could find a transcription of the register then it would be far easier to confirm. I cannot see James' father's name on the marriage to Helen, and I cannot see James' marital status (whether he was a widower) on his marriage to Mary Ann. There is also the option of purchasing the marriage certificates from the GRO.

I can’t see those names on Free BMD.

This says ‘Marriage notice’. Is that prior to a marriage?

Oddly there's a marriage on FreeBMD for a James Hickmott in the same quarter in Maidstone district. Bride either Susan Sarah Bolten/Botten or Emily Savage. Most likely Susan Sarah as I can see an Emily with the other groom and a Savage brother in law
