Parent Identification sought for Joshua ROSS
« on: Friday 12 May 23 05:52 BST (UK) »
Joshua ROSS was born in 1682 in Rothwell and married Mary PAYNE at the Holy Trinity Church on 22 April 1703. He died in1712 and was buried (I think) at the Holy Trinity Church. Joshua and Mary had four children (?) - John (b 1704), Joshua (b 1707), Richard (b 1708) and James (b 1710).

I am trying to trace his parents and further if possible. This branch of the ROSS family appears to have been around Selby, Rotherham and Thryburgh until Charles ROSS immigrated to Australia in 1878.

If you don't have his baptism how sure are you that he was born in Rothwell

There is a baptism in Hull for a Josia Ross 22 June 1681 father John.

Thanks trish1120 and emelton,

I have the baptism extract for Richard (18 Nov 1708) but thank you for the burial dates for Joshua and Mary and the spelling of PAINE. I have no strong basis for assuming Joshua was born in Rothwell but the family stayed in that general area (and are probably still there). I have distant great etc aunts who died in the 1990s and who had lived in Yorkshire all their lives.

Both Joshua and Mary died young. I was wondering about that. Was natural death at a young age typical or was misadventure common?

Unfortunately I am unable to say why they died young.
I wonder who looked after the children as they were very young when their parents died.

I did see somewhere that in 1715 the small-pox and measles were epidemic in England. But dont know if that site is trustworthy.
As to the spelling of Mary's surname Payne/Paine what the vicar heard was written down as people were often illiterate so were not able to argue with him!

Is Richard your ancestor?
Did he marry in Rothwell or venture elsewhere?

There are some very mucked up Trees on Anc!

Trish :)

Thanks Trish,

This is all good stuff. Yes Richard is an ancestor (5th great grandfather). He married Mary WHEATLEY on 13 Sep 1735 at Birstall, St Peter, Yorkshire, England according to my information.

I also have Mary WHEATLEY dying in 1740 but I've parked that for later investigation.

Thanks Osprey,

Joshua (d. 1712 Rothwell) appears to have been born in Ipswich, Massachusetts and is one of triplets. I think his grandfather Killecross Gilchrist ROSS (b. 1639 Dunbar, Scotland) was a survivor of the Battle of Worcester (1651) who as a POW was sent to Boston as an indentured servant and established a branch of the family there. I will chase up the will.

Thanks all.
