Hello,trying to trace service records for  an army soldier during ww2 ,we know he was in REME and was an engineer and  mine clearer  and was in North Africa & Italy (monte casino has been mentioned) where will we get the records from

Service records for all personnel serving after 1920 are still likely to be with the MOD.

You have to apply to TNA under the Freedom of Information Act for a search to be made:

https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/mod-open-foi-request-step1

It might be worth also making a (free) application to MoD just in case they still have the records:

The REME were not responsible for mine clearing and their soldiers were not generally referred to as 'engineers' despite the title of the corps being the Royal Electrical amd Mechanical Engineers. Mine clearing is the responsibility of the Royal Engineers.

Thanks andy,that may explain the old photo we have of him it mentions RE on it
