Elizabeth Oates
« on: Saturday 13 May 23 08:40 BST (UK) »
Elizabeth Fisk was born in 1866. In December 1899 she married Herbert Thomas Jessop, a soldier, but sadly he died just 3 months later in February 1900.

In 1905 Elizabeth married Simon James Oates, also a soldier, and they had a son Simon Kenneth Oates 1905.
In 1911 Simon Kenneth Oates was living with his two aunts and an uncle in Histon Cambridge. His father, Simon James Oates is recorded living in the Workhouse, Cambridge. No sign of Elizabeth.

There are a number of newspaper reports re.  Simon James Oates and the workhouse up to 1913. Then nothing.

I am assuming Elizabeth must have died before 1911, as you would expect her to be with her son.
but I can't find her.
In 1921 Simon James Oates in Medway with a whole group of people... I can't read the record.

Can anyone see Elizabeth's record for death ( or 1911 record) and confirm Simon James Oates death.
I found a death for Simon James Oates 1928 Medway 2a 1052, which may be him.

"Removed from St Paul's (Navy House)" - this is his address on the 1921 Census.

The 1913 newspaper items re. his workhouse stay make interesting reading.

Elizabeth Ann Fisk/Jessop/Oates has certainly gone to earth after 1905.

We have Simon on the 1906 and 1907 electoral roll at 34 Union Road but, of course, this was before ladies were invited to the party.
However, a newspaper snippet, dated 21 Sep 1906, refers to a Simon James Oates at that address and states "Mr Willams objected on the grounds that his (ie. Simon's) wife was the tenant".

Helps reduce the timeline when searching/cross checking.

I found Elizabeth Ann Oates died 1909 Q2 9c 355 Sheffield. Age 42 . Name and age are spot on.
Also a burial, Elizabeth Ann Oates, age 42, Burngreave Cemetery, Sheffield, 8 May 1909. Page 420.

Looks good, but a long way from Cambridge. Can anyone see the grave?
