Was looking at this grant what a ww1 soldier got , could some kind person tell mr what pen stands for between his first and last name on this form.

Oddly he has 4 of these PL cards & this is the only one with Pen on it.
It doesn't stand for anything it's just a clerk's mistake.
Looks like they've took 4 attempts to get it right as another has an extra "1"
in his service number.

                  was it common practice to give someone all that money ?   £50 must have been a awfull lot back then.

I think it is pen ie short for pensioner.  They may have got the annuity, gratuity or pension at the end of each length of service completed. 

When my ex husband left the navy he got all sorts of payments for length of service, where this service had taken place etc and I imagine these were granted under separate entitlements.

One of my gt gt grandfathers, also from ireland left the military & he got an annuity of GBP9.00 and I guess that helps explain how the family was able to support a child to train in Scotland for the ministry and my gt grandmother to read & write to a level that when she emigrated to NZ she was able act as a scribe/reader for her community when they got letters/newspapers from home. .
