Mary Ann Wilson Brickwall, who are her parents?
« on: Sunday 14 May 23 14:32 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I've hit a brick wall with an individual in my family tree and was wondering if someone would be able to help me get a better idea of her parents.

Mary Ann Wilson, born around 1860 (based on census), dying in 1934.

She married a Wilson Chester on the, 29 Apr 1877, in Shipley, St Paul, Yorkshire, England. Where her father is listed as Edward Wilson.

She may have been in a workhouse, according to the 1871 census and therefore I have no idea of her parents..  I can not find a 1971 census on Mary Ann Wilson, especially without parents names.

In the next 1881 census, she is already married and has children.

The problem I have is, as I don't have an early census, and can't say for sure where in Yorkshire she was born, I therefore can't find a birth record to find her parents.

I believe she was born in the Thirsk, Dalton Area of west yorkshire

I have found a census in 1861, of a Mary Ann Wilson, Edward Wilson, and Lavinia Wilson, living in the Lancashire area, but I can not say for sure, if these are her parents as the birth is Lancashire and not Yorkshire as all census records suggest, I can not say for sure that she was even born in time for this census.

Edward Wilson had no hits for a census, a birth, or even a marriage and so I am stuck.

The reason this is of particular importance to me, is that Mary Ann Wilson's husband, Wilson Chester, has his mother as an Ethel Wilson, and so I just need to go further to see if there (Hopefully not) is a relation between Ethel Wilson, And Mary's Father, Edward Wilson.

The birth index shows a Mary Ann Wilson in Thirsk in 1863, but as an index, does not show mothers maiden name.

Thanks for your time.

The 1863 birth registration for Mary Ann Wilson in Thirsk RD shows a mmn of Thompson (GRO website).
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Could you give the full census details for this please, as I'm not readily finding it.

I've actually just re-looked at this census, and I was incorrect, apologies.

I had mistaken her maiden name for her married name as the census was for a Chester! Sorry

Closest I'm finding in 1871 is this one, at the Dog and Gun Inn, Carlton Miniott, Thirsk RG10/4833/122/8
John Thompson 33 Public House born Borrowby, Yorkshire
Jane 29 wife b Cowesby, Yorks
Mary A Wilson 7 (c1864) niece b Thirsk

This suggests a connection to the birth registration posted earlier:

You say Mary Ann died 1934.  The Mary Ann Chester who died in 1934 was aged 87 - so not your Mary Ann

Wilson Chester appears to have died 1928 aged 78

Looks like this Mary Ann was the daughter of James Wilson and Violetta Thompson as there is a baptism for her in Thirsk and marriage between the above-mentioned parents in Easingwold in the same year.
