The only sort-of explanation I can come up with is this marriage in Kilburn on 15 Mar 1862

Might connect to that marriage

On 1861 census Ruth Maynard and Askwith Wilson are both in service at Church Farm, Sessay so there is a possibility he was Mary Ann’s birth father.

Its also interesting that Wilson & Mary Ann's second daughter is named Ruth, but it isn't a name that seems to appear in his family.

Their first daughter, Nancy, seems to be named after his sister, who may in turn have been named after his grandmother (this is only speculation, I haven't looked).

The only sort-of explanation I can come up with is this marriage in Kilburn on 15 Mar 1862:

Askwith WILSON 20 Farmers Servant, Sessay, Father = William Wilson, Labourer
Ruth MAYNARD 20 Spinster, Wass, Father = Robert Maynard, Labourer
Witnesses: Elizabeth Maynard (X), John Wilson

Ruth signed, but Askwith signed X.

I don't see any sign of them after this  ???

Don't know if this is the same man,  but its an unusual name
Asquith Wilson
in the Yorkshire, England, Quarter Session Records, 15 April 1865

It's a bastardy order, Asquith is of Hunslet, Leeds.
Woman is Mary Ann Moverley , child born 16 February 1865.

There are 2 more entries in the same year..

Possible birth registration for the child.

Interesting  :)

I got sidetracked with a John Asquith Wilson, but I think the correct one was baptised at Staveley, Yorkshire on 2 Jun 1844: Asker s/o William & Mary Wilson Labourer, Staveley

He’s with them in the 1851 census at Staveley as Usquith Wilson aged 7.  His parents and two siblings are still there in 1861, which leads to the birth registration of his brother:

WILSON, EDWARD mmn ASKWITH  GRO Reference: 1853  M Quarter in OF KNARESBRO  Volume 09A  Page 87

Also two brothers (one presumably died):
WILSON, WILLIAM mmn ASKWITH  GRO Reference: 1846  J Quarter in OF KNARESBRO  Volume 23  Page 425
WILSON, WILLIAM mmn ASKWITH  GRO Reference: 1850  J Quarter in OF KNARESBRO  Volume 23  Page 439

I have also found the same census, his marriage certificate to Ruth Maynard does show his father being William.

This is all so interesting.

Although I'm not quite sure about how to add this to my family tree, or even if I can yet?

Everyone else who has Mary Ann in their tree has just listed her father as the original, Edward, and just stopped there.
