Help with Johannesburg address
« on: Tuesday 16 May 23 01:23 BST (UK) »
This is from a xmas card written c1945 to 1970.  My uncle died in the TB ward in Johannesburg during the War and people who put up my grandmother from England kept in touch with her for many years after.  Would appreciate if someone can understand the address.  Are there voter rolls during that period?  I know one woman was called Mrs. Laver

There is a Cradock Heights on Cradock Avenue in Rosebank, Johannesburg - a possibility.

You're welcome. Unfortunately it looks like the original house is no longer there - the current office building was built in 1990 (and won an architectural award).

I saw that on google.  For a moment I thought it might have been an old apartment building, but no.  Are there electoral rolls c1940-1950's for there do you know?  I'd be curious who was living there.  Thx

Ancestry has South Africa Voter Indexes, 1719-1996. I tried searching with keyword "Cradock" and Johannesburg but didn't get a result for this address. Also tried surname "LAVER" and "Johannesburg" - didn't seem to come up with anything in the time period you are after. No "LAVER" however there was  a Lawrence Allen LEVER and Gwendoline Allen LEVER in 1931, but a different address.

There are a few hits for "LAVER" and Johannesburg on a general search of familysearch - maybe if you wanted to spend the time you could look through the images and see if any were in the Rosebank area?

I'm not an expert on South African records - someone more experienced may be able to offer some suggestions?
