John Coleman Dead or Disappeared?
« on: Wednesday 17 May 23 03:40 BST (UK) »
Several kind souls helped already to find John Coleman and Ann (Wootton) Coleman in 1841 and 1851 census in Hastings.  In 1856 his common law wife is sent to Bethnal Green Poor House from Hastings.

He continues to be a mystery for me.  Born appx 1811 in Essex and then living in Hastings, Sussex.  Findmypast has several deaths listed but no way to verify it is the right one.  Also with birth records there are many John Coleman's born in Essex.
Suggestions much appreciated.

The Essex Record Office in Chelmsford has digitized the parish records for Takeley.

Try a one day subscription and see if you can find John Coleman's baptism circa 1811.

I would look but my subscription has expired

Did he have children?  Perhaps a marriage or other event for one of them would provide a clue.

When did Ann pass away?  Her records may also provide a clue.

If Ann (Coleman) Wootton  was sent to the workhouse  with her children 1856, I would guess that John Coleman died sometime after the 1851 census and before 1856.

His death may not have been registered, perhaps All Saints Church may have a burial record

Thanks very much for looking into this family!  Sorry for the delay in getting back to your responses as we had internet out for a couple of days.

Ann died at the Workhouse 1872.  I do have the previous records but have not been able to get into parish records with any success.  Where could I look for possible church death or burial records?

The West Sussex Record Office has the Bishops Transcripts for All Saints, for a fee they will do a look up.

The Sussex Family History Society could also help.
