A couple of Canada Voters List entries for Annie Swift - 1949 - St Pauls Ontario - retired -
53 Huntley Street with James G Swift - retired.

Annie Swift still living at 53 Huntley Street in 1957. A fairly good age if she passed around this year.
So maybe a time frame for the death of James G Swift between 1949 - 1957 ??

Sandra

Globe and Mail 25 Oct 1951, page 22.  James Swift died Monday Oct 22 1951 at the home of his sister, 53 Huntley Street, Toronto.   Brother of Miss Annie Swift.  Aged 87.  Interment in Toronto Nectopolis.

Looking through the Toronto papers, there is a man named John Hallam who was very big in the fur and wool business, and went on to become an alderman for the City of Toronto.   He is from Chorley, Lancashire.  He came to Canada in 1856.   He writes a lot of letters to the papers about business issues, taxes etc!   Might be the John Hallam in Mr Swift's obit?

There is quite a lot online about Mr Hallam.   The Globe has a really long obit.   He was certainly from Chorley, Lancashire.   He had worked in a cotton mill when he was a child- under terrible conditions.   He taught himself to read and write.   He came to Canada in 1856 for a better future.  After 10 years of general work, he started his own business in 1866.  It grew considerably!!  He loved books, art etc and was a proponent of the free library system.   He championed the by law under which the Toronto Library was established and gave his own splendid library collection to the people.   He was an alderman for many years.
