« on: Thursday 18 May 23 04:27 BST (UK) »
Hi Folks

I'm searching for any service info or names of ships that this guy served on:

Name: Somerville, James born Nov 1788 Holborn

Possible service number: 5189 (from Pension rec)
Greenwich Hospital Out Pensioner record of 21 Sept 1827 state he served for 21 years, 0 mths, 3 weeks & 1 day
Last ship he served on was the Ramillies & received a pension of £24 8s pa for Life
Also mentioned as part of "Coast Blockage" in abt March 1831

He married in 1822 in Cork Ireland. His first child was reputed to have been born in Portugal in 1828.

Looks like he travelled a bit but I can't find any other info about him.

What extra info might be available and where should I look?

Thanks

You may be lucky and find him in the Canadian Maritime Records.

When the British Maritime archives needed space it decided to divest itself of their old maritime records, the Canadian Archives stepped to save them

Scroll down this web page.   Unfortunately, the print is too faint for me to check whether your surname is listed :-

That's interesting Rena

Congrats and appreciation to the Canadians for saving some UK records   8)

I've briefly looked thru one index and nothing so far but I'll need to spend more time on the site.

Many thanks for the suggestion & link

The site has changed considerably since I referred to it over a decade ago.  At that time I found the  people I was looking for quite easily,, but have to admit that I didn't have to trawl through a micro fiche.
