William Hanna burial
« on: Friday 19 May 23 00:00 BST (UK) »
Hi all.

I’m looking for the grave of my late great grandfather William Hanna. He was estranged from the family before his death and nobody still alive knows where he was buried. His two eldest children died young, and his youngest surviving child was just too young at the time to know much.

What she does know, and has told me, is that he died in hospital in Huddersfield circa 1973-76. We assume he was buried locally, probably a paupers grave. We assume that because we do know that his son got a call from the hospital to say that William was dying and travelled down from Scotland to Huddersfield, arranged a funeral and then left without ever seeing his father before his death (harsh I know,  we never did find out why).

My great grandfather was William Hanna born circa 1914 in Syon Mills Co Tyrone, N. Ireland. He married and lived in Scotland from 1940 onwards. How he ended up in Huddersfield I do not know.

Hi

I would think might have been cremated but some of the records were destroyed in an explosion, you could try and contact Kirklees bereavement services they might be able to help.

In 1976 I think the Huddersfield area had 6 hospitals so a burial could be harder to find. I would start whit Edgerton then Lockwood & Almondbury.

That’s them (marriage) I’ve got a photo of them somewhere. Their grandson was given the middle name Bradley after Annie. I know William and Annie only had two surviving children, Annie b. Circa 1912 and William 1914.

I looked up Rabbstown on a map and it’s between Doneyloop where William and Annie are buried, and Sion Mills where they lived, so that’s about right.

I rang Kirklees council, it seemed like fate as I realised today would have been Williams birthday.

Anyway, he’s buried in an unmarked grave in Edgerton cemetery in Huddersfield. I’ve got the plot number too.

I find that a lot of time the people who work in these department can be very helpful & sometimes the direct approach works.

Going by the year of death I would assume he was buried in the extension part of the cemetery so the section should begin with a letter B was consecrated with G & R unconsecrated. The R part tended to be for Catholic burials.

Indeed I did. I’d love to know the story about why an Irishman who had a Scottish wife and family ended up estranged from his entire family and died alone. His niece (in Ireland) told me that her mother, his sister, wasn’t even told he was dead. She found out in 1983 when my dad (his grandson via his eldest son) visited her. It’s all very odd.
