Charles Alfred Nicholl - School of Military Engineering

Hi,

Charles was born Sept Qtr 1862 at Strand, London and can be seen aged 9 in 1871 census with his parents Robert, Kate and various siblings at Portugal Street, Westminster, London. By 1881 he is in Gillingham, Kent, age now showing as 21, unmarried with the Royal School of Engineering, Brompton Barracks, as a driver.

Presumably he was with the Royal Artillery but I cannot find any further trace of him.

Any ideas?

Hi,

Thanks for that but that marriage certificate shows his father as William - its not the correct family.

A number of people have included this in their trees but its incorrect. My Charles's father is Robert  and his  occupation is a Mathematical Instrument Maker. Also the surname is shown as Nicholls not Nicholl.

Discharged 1888 - To Reserve

There is a six-page military record (service documents) at Fold3 for Charles Alfred Nicholl, Royal Artillery, 5495.

He attested May 3rd 1878 at Woolwich.
Next of kin: father Robert, 4 Portugal Street, Lincolns Inn Fields
It is an extensive record with lots of service and medical details.
In 1881 he was at Chatham, a driver.
He spent a year in India in 1886-1887.
The last posting listed is Woolwich, 20/12/87.

The 1930 NSW Electoral Roll has .
Charles Alfred NICHOLL at 144 Harris Street Parramatta. Nil occupation.
No others of the surname at that address.

Being greedy, I wonder if you can find his brother William Nicholl born 1864 Strand. He appears in 1900's census "married" to Eliza Jane - supposedly around 1904 but I cannot see any trace of it, nor his Army record as the census shows him as "Army Pensioner". Eliza Jane was born in Ripple, Kent about 1872

William Nicholl died in 1934 at Steyning Sussex with "his wife" Eliza J Nicholl death in Worthing in 1837
