I believe John and Mary are too young to be James' parents; rather, I think James is a younger brother of John. The 1911 census indicates that Mary has borne 8 children, of which 5 are still living, and they have been married 33 years, so married around 1878.

Charles' marriage in 1883 gives his address as Little Donegal Street and his father as Campbell Martin (deceased). John Brown is one of the witnesses, but I've yet to find John & Mary's marriage:

I know the age is a bit off but could this be your James Brown in 1901 with mother Hanna and brother William?

Baptism of John from a St. Patrick's (Belfast) register, 1855:

" [ditto from above, ie. 6 September] John Brown John Hanna Skays Thomas Karin? Catherine Lynch

https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000633210#page/54/mode/1up  (right hand page, 20 lines down)

John and Hanna Brown had several children baptised in St. Patricks from 1855 to 1865, this is the clearest entry I could see, for Ellen #1 on 11 April 1859:

" Ellen Brown John + Hanna Skeas   Margaret Kearney

https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000633210#page/141/mode/1up  (right hand page, 16 lines down)

Marriage in St. Patrick's, Belfast, on 27 September 1854:

" John Brown Hannah Skey Michael Bernott Margt. Leitch?  (right hand page, 2nd line  up from bottom)

Thanks for this -

Seems to be a good lead as Kent Street is close to Unity Street which was the address of James Brown upon his marriage in 1902 (both streets close to Carrick Hill and St Patrick's RC Church).

I can confirm that the maiden name of James' mother was Hanna Skea.

PS - ages are always a difficulty in this period but there is a significant difference (36 in 1901 census and 28 upon marriage 1902).
