Generally speaking, I trace backwards using baptisms, marriages, burials, etc., and verifying each event from contemporary sources.

I see. What happens when documents are not available, Some church records become damaged or lost and the further back you go documents don't exist.

If documents are not available, you have to consider what other sources there may be.  If there are none, the research may come to a halt or face a delay.
