1901 Census Help Please
« on: Saturday 27 May 23 03:23 BST (UK) »
I can not find David Start born 1865 Coningsgsby Lincolnshire on the 1901 census. David was an Ironstone Miner

I have him in 1891 transcribed as Darold Start living Old Saltburn Brotton Yorkshire with his wife Eliza and son Joseph 2.
Piece   3998
Folio   40

In 1901 Eliza and 3 other children are living with her mother in New Marske Yorkshire with George 12, Mary 9 & Benjamin 7
Eliza is shown as Married

Piece 4569
Folio   45
Page number   28
Household schedule number   169

In 1911 they are back together at Brotton, Hinderwell Yorkshire with his wife married 22 years and 3 of their children.

Many thanks for any help.

A long shot - there is a D SMART, no other details except his occupation which is "Ironmonger" in 4 Rye Lane, Camberwell, London.
RG13/504/9 pg5

Modified to add -
Actually, possibly the entry above is the business location, there is also a David SMART, 41, (boarder, single, born Scotland), an ironmonger, at 14 Grantham Rd, Lambeth.
RG13/423/99 pg11

So probably not your David.  :-\

He was a former soldier (401, Manchester Regiment 1882-1885) so service in the Boer War is a possibility.

Can't see him in the Boer War medal rolls. He had been discharged in 1885 as medically unfit so if he did volunteer for service in South Africa he may have used an assumed name.
