Anyone heard of a Roller Washer?
« on: Saturday 27 May 23 23:35 BST (UK) »
I have a relative with a job description of Roller Washer in the 1871 Census. I’ve looked through a number of old job title records and cannot find this job anywhere.

Any help would be gratefully received.

This is the reference for the 1871 census -

Name: John Marsden
Household schedule number 214
Piece   4142
Folio   83
Page number 51

Thank you
Angela x

In 1861 he was a cotton weaver so it was possibly something connected to this occ

A bit later, but according to the 1921 census guide:

"roller washer
washes copper rollers used in textile printing, either with a hand brush over a trough, or in a machine."

in the 1970's I worked in The Metal Box in Speke Liverpool
in the Printing department they had large rollers that sometimes got printing Ink on them - cleaned by a Roller Washer - cleaned with Methyl -Pyrrol - highly inflammable and masks had to be worn - a very dodgy occupation health wise
