John and Martha Dickson
« on: Sunday 28 May 23 07:12 BST (UK) »
A few years ago I had a Lot of help from Rootschat about my 3rd great grandfather William Dickson born 20-601756 at Langwith Farm Wheldrake Yks.His wife was Susannah Rhymer. Since then I have found his parents were John Dickson and Martha , I have emailed Wheldrake church and the Rector told me all their records were at the Heslington Uni, I don't seem able to get in to their records and wondered if any one can help me, there seems to be no way I can find out more about the Dickson line. I would be so grateful for any help Pam..

Wheldrake registers are online at FindMyPast.

(For anyone else reading this, "Heslington Uni" is shorthand for the Borthwick Institute at the University of York, which is in the suburb of Heslington.)
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson

FindMyPast may have the parish records for Wheldrake, but William Dickson is not included.

HOWEVER, Ancestry and FindMyPast have parish records for Yorkshire AND Willham Dickson is included in the baptisms for St Martin, Coney Street, York - Willham, son of John Dickson - 20 Jun 1756.  Transcription gives date as 20 Jan 1756 (FindMyPast).

Not sure which of the two images is the register and which is the BT.   :-\

Looking at the original record which is on Ancestry, the date is 20 June 1756.

Possibly brothers for William baptised at the same church - James in 54 and John in 52.

There is no mention on any of the baptisms that the mother is named Martha - so where does that come from, I wonder?

I also noticed that there is a marriage at St Martin, Coney Street, York - 12 November 1734 for Willham Dickson of Adal and Elisabeth Wood of this parish.  Could this Willham be an uncle to your Willham?

Wheldrake registers are Dade registers and looking at the baptism of William and Susannah’s daughter Ann b. 18 June 1781 William’s parents were:

John Dickson, also of Langwith farm, and Elizabeth

and Susannah’s parents were:

William Rymer and his wife Martha. William was a roper of Dishforth.

William was married in 1774, so I suspect that birth in 1756 may not be for the right William, as he would have been under age when married.

Added - have looked at the marriage again. He was age 25, so should be looking for a birth around 1749 / 1750.

As the 1774 marriage was by Licence, it might help to see the Bond and Allegation  :-\

ADDED - transcription says that he was aged 25, and that Susannah was 21.
