STEPHENSON family in Terrington before 1826?
« on: Monday 29 May 23 12:25 BST (UK) »
Hi, Everyone,
I was wondering whether someone with access to the PR's of Terrington could have a glance through for me to see whether the STEPHENSON family were celebrating their rites of passage in the 18thC and even before that.  The earliest reference I have come across is a 29th January 1826 marriage between a James STEPHENSON and a Mary WRIGHT there.
Many thanks in advance,
Keith

Hi Keith,

James was most likely the son of David Stephenson (there is an 1800 baptism at Terrington for James son of David). David Stephenson married Mary Peckitt at Terrington in 1797.

A Thomas Stephenson married Sarah Campleman at Terrington in 1778.

There are at least 13 Stephenson baptisms, marriages and burials in the Terrington registers up to 1812

Hi again, Shaun,
Very good to know that your still active on these boards!
And of course  many thanks for that swift response to my query.  Now that the CCRO have moved to Ely from Shire Hall, Cambridge I can no longer grab those windows of opportunity and dash up Castle Hill to do lookups in the original sources for the kind souls on Rootschat these days...
Keith
...oh, and there's more, posts crossed.  Further thanks for these, Shaun...

I think they are all on FindMyPast and Ancestry, and some at least are on TheGenealogist.

Thomas Stephenson was of Allerthorp when he married 1778 Terrington.
Sarah of Terrington.
(Allerthorp, East Riding?)

FreeREG has 17 entries 1778-1812 under Stephenson.
Davids abode was Ganthorpe on childrens bapts.

I noticed also an alternative spelling of Steinson in Terrington.

There's an 1800 baptism of Isabella, illegitimate daughter of Hedney Stephenson.

Hedney (or Edna) Steinson married Richard Young at Terrington in 1810.

Hi again, Trish1120 (still rocking that baby, I see!),
And many thanks for showing that the net needs to be cast slightly further afield to follow this particular STEPHENSON ancestral line.  Allerthorpe just over 20 miles away from Terrington.  One could make some kind of ill-thoughtout  joke/pun about it only being a few hours riding (on a horse) from East to North (Riding) in those days...
And Shaun, we could all do without the surname variants!  But I'll see whether we can blame the parish clerk or incumbent vicar for that rather German variation, and perhaps claim Edna/Hedney as a member of this STEPHENSON clan...
