The name is very common in Co Down which is just a few miles from Wigtown. There it tends to be Miskelly but it’s the same name. Many many folk from Co Down moved to Wigtownshire in the 1700s and 1800s. (The main ferry service between Ulster and Scotland for many years was from Donaghadee to Portpatrick. Huge numbers crossed to Galloway for work).

So you may find some of these families came from Ireland. (Though further back in the 1600s they may also have gone to Ireland from Scotland).

RosDavies site has many Miskelly families:

Hi Elwyn .Many thanks for the info on the Family. I appreciate this . As for the Irish links , well i have gone down that route and still think they came from Scotland alone. I will look at your suggested Ros Davies info and ponder on this . Best wishes .

What timescale is involved?  If after 1841 do you have any documentary evidence (census etc) showing Wigtown as their birthplace?

There is a Giovanni Miscally b 1883 - London Workhouse records

Burial for William John Miscally 1853 Carlisle - 1851 is under Miskelly & shows he was born Cumberland.  Parents Thomas & Mary plus eldest son James were b Ireland.  Death reg Miskally

Hi Carole ,

My ancestor from Wigtown was Born in 1740 , so some time back and i do not think i will find any records because of this. After pondering on Elwyn's info , i am tempted to believe that the Family came from Northern Ireland (it is all in that surname) So i will try and do some Irish research . Thanks for your contribution. Best wishes.
