Canadian Census Records
« on: Friday 02 June 23 08:40 BST (UK) »
Hello
Is there any way I can find an address on Census records in Toronto without a name in 1920's & 1930"s
My Great Uncle, John Brown, sailed from Glasgow to Canada in June 1920, to stay with a Mrs Sneddon at Galt Avenue, Toronto.  I can't find any details on her for that time.  I don't think she was related.
John was born in September 1893 at Dykehead Cottage, Stonehouse, Lanarkshire.  His parents were James Brown and Agnes Dickson.
My late Mother told me that her Mother always wandered what happened to her Brother John and died not knowing

Possible for "Mrs Sneddon"? :-\
Andrew Sneddon, 20, born Scotland, is at 137 Galt Avenue in 1921
Son to Archibald Robertson, 44, and Jessie Robertson, 40, both born Scotland.

From Jessie's death cert her maiden name was Cathcart
Marriages
George Sneddon + Jessie Cathcart, 1898, Blantyre
Archibald Robertson + Jessie Cathcart Sneddon, 1914, Toronto, Ontario. Both widowed.

For the 1931 census, you can try searching though the East York census records although that can be a challenge (as I have found out) because each subdistrict only covers a small area, and the subdistricts are not organized in the most logical fashion.

During 1931 the city's population was fairly dense so a specific sub-district is only going to cover a few blocks. I had luck finding my ancestors by cross referencing the streets on the census against the 924 map from this site: https://www.arcgis.com/apps/View/index.html?appid=d38469bfb363441d98b21f239adfd0a3

If your unsure of a name or address you could also try looking the person up in the Toronto city directories. https://www.torontopubliclibrary.ca/history-genealogy/lh-digital-city-directories.jsp. I have used this approach to find my Toronto ancestors in the 1931 and had fairly good luck.
