Marriott Mystery Frisby on the Wreake
« on: Friday 02 June 23 18:20 BST (UK) »
I am faced with a conundrum. According to IGI Isaac and Jane Marriott baptized Thomas Beeson Marriott in 1855 in the Anglican faith. In 1856 they baptized a second Thomas in the Anglican Church. My gtgrandfather was Thomas Beeson Marriott according to our family but here’s the problem. In no census are both Thomases recorded. My Thomas records his birth as 1854 on his death record. There is a Thomas recorded on the prison system including the national habitual prisoners list in 1891 when he was released from Parkhurst. His record shows  was born in 1856 in Frisby on the Wreake as does his census record in 1891. This Thomas was a bad,bad man with 3 convictions for nasty crimes. I am wondering a couple of things- a. Would Isaac and Jane baptize Thomas  twice or did they have 2 Thomases? b. Did Thomas Beeson die and the second Thomas used his name and birthdate in later censuses after he was released? Any hints as to how to proceed? I see no death records for a Thomas in Frisby on the Wreake during the short time between 1854 and 1856.

I see a marriage for Thomas Beeson Marriott in 1897.In Melton M. Do you think it's a bit old for a first marriage?

I personally think there is only 1 Thomas (Beeson) Marriott. I see he was baptised in 1855 but was also baptised again 1856 on the same date as his sister Mary Ann. As has been said there is only 1 Thomas Marriott born with mmn Beeson in between 2 sisters.

I agree

Without access to images, there's a few possibilities, including that Thomas's date of birth has been mistranscribed as a baptism date, or that, as sometimes happened, he was baptised privately at home soon after birth owing to an illness he might not survive, then baptised again publicly later on

Thanks for all the replies. He married my gtgrandmother Jane Beeson in 1897 and Thomas Marriott’s prison records state he was single at the time of his release in 1891. He is listed as Merrit in the 1861 census. I am thinking that my gtgrandfather is indeed the same one as that of the Parkhurst Thomas Marriott. Black sheep indeed.

Did he not marry Susanah Walton in 1897 and sadly died in 1909.
