This newspaper letter suggests that it was a site for basic training for both RAF and WRAF around that time.

20 August 1982, Stamford Mercury

Training together

SIR. – I wish to dispute a small portion of an article in the Mercury for August 13, heading RAF's Training County.

It states: "It is the first time in RAF history that men and women have done basic training on the same base."

This is not so as in 1956 I did basic training for National Service at RAF Wilmslow and the WRAF basic training was being done on the same base.

I would be interested to hear from anyone else who can remember or was training at Wilmslow at that time, or in the Forces from 1956-58 when I am sure this training was being done.

Thanks for that Alan.

My dad always said he wanted to retire to Wilmslow as there was a bank on every corner.
Sadly he died aged 46 and I bet there's no banks at all there now.
