CLARK - Derbs/Staffs
« on: Monday 05 June 23 15:02 BST (UK) »
Mary CLARKE was bap 05 Apr 1775 in Ellastone, Staffs, parents Thomas & Elizabeth.

The only marriage I've been able to find is:-

11 May 1752 - Thomas CLARK m Elizabeth COLLIER in Ellastone

Their offspring were:-

16 Feb 1753  Richard    bap in Norbury & Roston, Derbs
       do         Thomas         do            do          do
15 May 1757 John              do            do          do
06 May 1759 Joseph           do            do          do

Then follows a hiatus of some 14 years until

18 Jul 1773  Samuel     bap in Ellastone
05 Apr 1775 Mary                  do
03 Jul  1778 Ann                    do
02 Jul  1780 Elizabeth            do

I find it hard to believe that the above represent only one family, especially when considering the probable age of Elizabeth and the following burials in Ellastone:-

30 Jul 1759   Elizabeth CLARK
17 Oct 1768  Elizabeth CLARK, wife of Thomas

but I cannot find another Thomas & Elizabeth marriage between 1759 and 1773.

There is a strong possibility that this is Thomas's burial:-

29 Feb 1784  bur of Thomas CLARKE, aged 88, in Ellastone

and this is the burial of his second wife (if he had one):-

25 Jun 1826  bur of Elizabeth CLARK, aged 67, in Norbury

I am confused; can anyone help, please?

Agreed.

Mary (1775) is my interest but, if we're correct and there are two families, where's the record of a marriage between Thomas CLARKE & Elizabeth XXXX prior to the bap of Samuel in 1773?

I'm thinking I should forget the apparent Derbs connection and concentrate on Ellastone. Should I mark this thread as 'complete' and open another thread in the Staffs section?

I'm not so sure you should forget the Derbyshire connection, Norbury is only 1 mile & Roston 2 miles from Ellastone, Staffs. Sadly I am unable to find the Derbyshire records for those two places but you noted that the Thomas & Elizabeth who married 1752 had a son Thomas in 1753, could he not be the father of Mary 1775.

There are marriages for a Thomas & Elizabeth in Staffordshire and elsewhere, or maybe the record did not survive, or they did not marry?

Unfortunately, you're right on all counts!

Anyway, I've just put a revised posting on Staffs but, in the light of your latest, I'm not very hopeful.

To avoid duplication, I shall mark this thread as 'completed' unless you think otherwise

Sometimes a similar post can confuse the issue, it is best to link the two otherwise members may waste time on what is already known.

Just add a reference of your new post to the original, I would suggest you do not mark the original as completed.

If in doubt contact the Moderator.
