Little Budworth - 1961 - COMPLETED WITH VERY MANY THANKS
« on: Monday 05 June 23 16:05 BST (UK) »
A horrible admission I have to make  :'(

My grandmother, Maria (Milner) Appleyard, born in Halifax and died 8 February 1961 at The Post Office, Little Budworth.  BUT I don't know what happened to her body.

I am almost 100% sure that she wasn't buried at St Peter in the village.  There is certainly no headstone etc. as there was for my other grandparents, Walter Stanley and Annie Kendall.

I have it in the back of my mind that she was cremated - but where?  My gut instinct is Northwich.  My parents were cremated in Crewe in 1970 and 1994.

Any thoughts or ideas of where I might look?

Was she a widow in 1961?  If so might she be with your grandfather?

If there was a funeral notice in the newspaper it might tell you something useful.

Yes, she was a widow, but he died in WW1 in France (remembered at Thiepval).

I've had a look in The Chester Chronicle but can't see anything.

I feel really dreadful now, because she was my favourite grandmother (the other one was very miserable)- we went on holiday together since I was about 13/14, just the two of us.  :)

And since my mother was taken ill, she moved from Halifax, and looked after us all - her daughter, son-in-law and grand-daughter.

Would there be any relatives who would remember going to the funeral and could help you out?

I hope you find her  :)

Our household in Little Budworth, at that time comprised:

My father,  mother, myself (although I was away during the week at College) plus grandmother.  My other grandparents who had originally moved from Halifax, were both dead by this time.  All other members of family were resident in Yorkshire.

What I'm looking for is a possible/probable crematorium near to Little Budworth - was there one in Northwich?

She's listed at Deceased Online, with a cremation somewhere in what is now Greater Manchester. Full details are available if you have a subscription or buy credits, but based on the list of crematoria at the Cremation Society (https://www.cremation.org.uk/list-of-crematoria-by-year-of-opening) I suspect it might have been Altrincham. (This now comes under Trafford Council, and their page on crematoria sends you to Deceased Online for records.)

Added:
Records from Manchester and Salford are also at Deceased Online - I think they'd be the next most likely in Greater Manchester.
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson
