Gorrell family Enniskillen pre1860s
« on: Monday 05 June 23 20:04 BST (UK) »
I’m looking for help on an ancestor of mine.
Her name was Mary Ellen Gordon and she was born 1850 Enniskillen.

Although Gordon was listed as her fathers surname (George Gordon Clog maker) on the marriage certificate to her husband, the surname she used for her first husband was Gorrell.

I think I have the birth certificate and her parents are listed as being Johannes and Maria Gorrell. I believe this was in a Catholic Church…

I can’t find out who Johannes or Maria were, I’ve been looking at this for years! The closest on anything I can find is a John Gorrell that married a Mary Colgan…

Please help! Who was it George or John? Gordon or Gorrell!?

Any input would be greatly appreciated

An Ellen Gorrell married John Walker in 1870 in Enniskillen (father John Gorrell, shoemaker)- is this Mary Ellen's 1st marriage? Both bride and groom signed with a mark so probably couldn't read with was written in the register.

Civil registration of births didn't begin until 1864 but it sounds as though you've found a possible baptism.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

The records you have found are RC. It was common for them to be kept in Latin.  So Johannes & Maria are just John & Mary. In addition to Mary’s baptism on 9th Aug 1845, I see a sibling Helena Gorrell on 16th May 1850 again in Enniskillen parish.

A John Gorrell died in Enniskillen on 4th April 1865 aged 50. Might be the father. No sign of the mother’s death so she may have died before 1864 when death registration started.

Can’t help with the Gorrell/Gordon conundrum.

An Ellen Gorrell signed with her mark as a witness at this marriage in Enniskillen in 1869-

Just from things I’ve read or been told over the years…apparently the Gorrell family wernt Catholics? So maybe the fact that it was a RC church indicates that the mother was RC?

And yes, the marriage to John Walker was her first marriage :)
