John Cable/Cabell & variants - baptism 1721 Durnford
« on: Tuesday 06 June 23 11:29 BST (UK) »
Hi, I can't seem to fnd these registers online so wondered if anyone had access and could look for the above baptism please.

I have no idea of his parentage although lots of people have Henry and Sarah but without any sources.  Possible date only from age at death so could be a few years out.

Any info appreciated thanks.

FindMyPast has transcripts only.
A Henry and Sarah Cable, Durnford baptised a Thomas, 26 Dec 1717, a Chancy 10 Mar 1718, a Thomas 10 Mar 1718 and a Thomas 10 Mar 1719.

No John in frame checking 1710-1730

The burial of a Thomas, son of Henry recorded 14 Mar 1717 and a Thomas, son of Mary, recorded 14 Mar 1818.

W/out sight of originals cannot check out the repeat of day/month ie.10 Mar and 14 Mar with different years but suspect related to old calendar?

There's a baptism at nearby Shrewton -
John Cable, bap. Shrewton, 9 Feb 1729/30 (old calendar again), parents William and Martha.

But 1720 v 1729 a bit of a divide?

If he's the John Cable, cordwainer, Durnford that married a Mary Haines, his marriage licence bond 10 Jun 1746 gives his age as 25 (1721).
Think the 1729 baptism can be ruled out?

Hello
The volume of parish records should be on Ancestry but as you know it is missing.
The family trees will have looked at Henry Cabel/Cables  a shepherd of Great Durnford's Will of 1763 which is on Ancestry.
It gives five children still alive at the time.
Harry shopkeeper of City of New Sarum
John Cabel
James Cabel
Elizabeth Damlick wife of Thomas
and William Cabel  £30 each.
Elizabeth and William are yet to reach the age of 21 years.
Mary presumably his second wife gets 9d a week. She gets the House in procession of Henry's son Thomas, bed and bedding and kitchen equipment.
Thomas the other child gets the rest of the estate.
The Will was made 16 Dec 1755.

So presumably John was the third son born after Thomas in  1719 ,then Harry maybe 1721 (marriage bond to Mary Jeffreys 1748 Salisbury St Thomas)  and then your John 1721/2.
Sister Elizabeth married Thomas Damlick 2.10.1751  so born  1730's
John Cable is a Master shoemaker in 1756 taking on apprentice Humphrey Seamell so he must be 21+++  and we know from James's burial he was born 1735 and died 1823

I'm guessing the register of baptisms just happens to be missing
There are Wills for sons Harry 1787, Betty Dumlick 1805  and Thomas 1808 but none  mention their brother John who was already dead by then.

Hope that helps

Have checked with Wiltshire archives who confirm that the register covering baptisms at Durnford 1718-1751 and the BT's 1718-1731 have not survived so will not get any confirmation of his parentage.

Look to see who is there baptising children and take a best guess I think.

However, thanky you both for your responses.
