Thank you so much Mabel and Osprey.  So very helpful and such useful info.  I was hoping to discover James' parents, but maybe it's too far back in time.
Deepwell is mentioned, and I know James worked there for 17yrs.  Unfortunately, I'm not sure what it is or where, and can't find it on OS maps.  Should anyone know more I'd be very grateful.  Thank you again.

There's a couple of newspaper references to Deepwell. One refers to it as being on the warren, another as near Newport. In the 1870s there's a reference to a Miss Griffiths of Deepwell and in July 1913 the death of a Mr Griffiths of Deepwell

I was wondering about this place - https://historicplacenames.rcahmw.gov.uk/placenames/recordedname/71b69df3-6813-42e6-8394-208430734c3e   It's in the right area.

Ffynnon Dyfan is Dyfan's Well in English, but I thought perhaps it was a mishearing/recording/adaptation of Ffynnon Dwfn - which is Welsh for Deep well
