Thomas John Patterson - Carrickfergus Mayor

Hello all,

Is anyone on rootschat related to this man? FTDNA tested? I have been told that Thomas John Patterson (3 Feb. 1893 - 30 Jan. 1981) was a nephew of Elizabeth (Bessie) Barnes Jane Dalway Patterson (about 1862 - 27 February 1941). Bessie married Thomas McCalmont (1859 - 1903), my great-grandfather Alexander McCalmont's brother. I have found a great amount of information on the Patterson family but cannot, with certainty, confirm the familial relationship with the former Carrickfergus Mayor. Any help confirming this aunt/nephew relationship is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

It's too bad the borough council office does not have personal information on the town mayors.
I realize that in those times a man might have more than one profession but it can be confusing to research going from labourer to painter to coachman.
The suggestion of DNA testing is because a Thomas Patterson was born 1864

and, since Kilroot is only 2 miles from Prospect Street, it is possible that the father, William Patterson, is also the father of Bessie. I would like to prove/disprove a familial connection.

I'd still like to see if Mary was a blood relative to my McCalmont family. Too bad the early 1800's records didn't survive.

If profession is a sticking point, please note that a transcript I can see of the church record of that marriage between Thomas McCalmont and Elizabeth Patterson on 21 November 1884 at Carrickfergus Independent Congregational Church shows the occupation of the bride's father William as 'coachman', contrary to 'painter' in the civil registration. So he must have been both.

Thanks for the post. You have provided great information. I took the same tack re: occupation but I didn't have access to the church records. I wonder why the difference in records.
