Mary CLARKE, Ellastone, 1770's
« on: Wednesday 07 June 23 15:05 BST (UK) »
Mary was the second of 4 children baptized in Ellastone by Thomas & Elizabeth CLARKE, whose family seemed to comprise:-

18 Jul 1773  Samuel
05 Apr 1775 Mary
03 Jul  1778 Ann
02 Jul  1780 Elizabeth

The only marriage between a Thomas CLARKE and an Elizabeth XXXXX which I've been able to find is:-

11 May 1752 - Thomas CLARK m Elizabeth COLLIER in Ellastone

and they had 4 children who were all baptized in Norbury between 1753 and 1759. That they seemed to have no more children might be explained by

30 Jul 1759  burial of Elizabeth CLARK in Ellastone

This marriage seems to be far too early, as it would make Elizabeth about 42 when Samuel was born and 49 by the time of daughter Elizabeth's birth in 1780, but I cannot find another Thomas & Elizabeth marriage between then and 1773.

This might be Thomas's burial:-

29 Feb 1784  bur of Thomas CLARKE, aged 88, in Ellastone

making him 84 when daughter Elizabeth was born!

I am confused; can anyone help, please?

I think from the dates it looks like two separate families. The marriage may not have taken place in Ellastone if the bride (Elizabeth) was from elsewhere. Can't see a suitable marriage (from a very quick look), however as mentioned on the previous thread, there could be many reasons a marriage cannot be found. Frustrating, but part of the joys of family history.

Sorry - I've only now stumbled across your replies. I used to receive an e-mail whenever a reply was posted to a topic in which I am interested, but that seems to have stopped. Does anyone know what's happened?

Thanks for all your inputs, as a result of which I am now quite happy to accept that there are two, unconnected, families. Consequently, I believe that I need a marriage a few years prior to 1773, and I've found only one which appears to fit the bill:-

In St Augustine, Rugeley, on

17 Jan 1769  Thomas CLARKE of St Mary's, Stafford  m  Elizabeth TAYLOR of Rugeley

I appreciate that this is some 16 miles from Ellastone, but this couple did have 4 years to get there!

They appear to have had a son:-

01 Nov 1772  William   bap in Badsey, Staffs

but I can't find a parish of that name, and the original is not available so I can't check the handwriting. Any thoughts?

Hi Garlands, I had seen the marriage you mention and thought it was a possible match, there were no children for them in Rugeley that I could see but the one you found is on family search, noted as The parish of Badsey in the County of Stafford. However the only Badsey I can see is in Worcestershire and the baptism is on freereg.

William CLARK   Baptism   1 Nov 1772   Worcestershire   Badsey : St James : Other Transcript

However I came across the web site below, despite this is from a later period there seems to be a Staffordshire connection.

It looks like that Thomas & Elizabeth had earlier records at  Badsey : St James

Joseph CLARK   Baptism   29 Jul 1764
Sarah CLARK   Baptism   19 Oct 1766
John CLARK   Baptism   28 May 1769
William CLARK   Baptism   1 Nov 1772

That may not however rule out the marriage at Rugeley.
