Thank you.

I've followed-up your leads, and believe that we can forget the Badsey records; the Badsey Society is definitely concerned with the parish of that name in Worcs, so the reference to Staffs in the baptismal record for William must be an error, as seems to be confirmed by the other Badsey baptisms.

In the absence of any other 'candidates', I think I'm going to have to go with the Rugeley marriage and accept a 4-year gap between it and the baptism of Samuel. That may not be unreasonable when one considers that the baptisms of Mary and Ann were separated by well over 3 years.

Hi George,

Between 1747 & 1837 this is the only Thomas burial record on freereg, its the one you know about.

Thomas CLARKE   Burial 29 Feb 1784   Staffordshire   Ellastone : St Peter : Other Transcript

There are two Elizabeth’s noted as wife of Thomas, neither could be the mother of Mary 1775.

Elizabeth CLERK   Burial 30 Jul 1759   Staffordshire   Ellastone : St Peter : Other Transcript

Elizabeth CLARK   Burial 17 Oct 1768   Staffordshire   Ellastone : St Peter : Other Transcript

So did Thomas and Elizabeth move away from Ellastone after 1780, if Thomas was the one born in 1747, he would only be 33 and I guess Elizabeth something similar?

I do not see any burials at Ellastone for their children and the only possible marriage there is Ann below. What do you know about Mary and the others?

18 Jul 1773 Samuel
05 Apr 1775 Mary
03 Jul 1778 Ann    -     Married Wm Jackson 1796 Ellastone?
02 Jul 1780 Elizabeth

Colin,

I believe that this is Mary's marriage:-

09 Apr 1795  Mary CLARKE m George RATCLIFFE at St Peter, Alton, both otp

and which is where her husband was baptized.

I know nothing about her siblings other than their baptisms.

Mary seems to be correct but sadly no apparent link to her parents. Their death or burial would help.

Colin,

Thank you; all very useful.

Concerning the RATCLIFFE connection, I have:-

William RATCLIFFE (ca 1660) m Elizabeth MARTIN  01 Nov 1681 in Repton

Joseph RATCLIFFE (1695) m Mary GREGORY  07 Jan 1723  in Derby

George RATCliFFE (1738) m Ann BULLOCK 22 Aug 1761  in Alton

George RATCLIFFE (1764) m Mary CLARKE 09 Apr 1795  in Alton

George RATCLIFFE (1800) m Lydia BURTON 27 Dec 1819 in Selston

I have to confess to failing to recognise that George III probably was still alive by the time of the '41 census!

Having 'found' Mary CLARKE, with your considerable assistance, I think it's time too mark that thread 'complete', together with its companion in the Common Room.

Are there any reasons for not doing so?

Personally I would not mark it completed because there are unanswered questions, you never know?

I had a look at the rest of the family, nothing on Elizabeth 1780 but others below, not sure about these.

It looks likely that Ann Clarke 1778, sister of Mary married and remained in Ellastone.

3 Jul 1778 Ann    - Married Wm Jackson 1796 Ellastone

They had children named Mary 1796 & 1803, Samuel 1802.

There are two burials on family search at Saint Peter's Cemetery. Ellastone

William Jackson born about 1783, burial 21 Aug 1815

Ann Jacson born about 1786 Burial 1 October 1835

So age not correct for Ann but it depends who gave her age?

……..

I came across this death of Samuel born 1773?

CLARK, SAMUEL       73

On 1841 above. No marriage.
Isaac Clark Christening 16 October 1814 Bradley, Derbyshire Parents Samuel Clark, Elizabeth

Plus: Isaac 1801 died same year, Elizabeth 1803, Mary 1804. Charles 1806,

Elizabeth Clark born 1773 Burial 26 Jan 1815 Bradley, Derbyshire Dales District, Derbyshire All Saints Churchyard
