Abernethy Can Anyone Identify when this was taken?

We don't know who it is because it wasn't labeled but we're hoping if we can find out when it was taken, then it will lead us to who it might be.

From newspapers looking for the photographer, it would seem the photograph would have been taken between 1864 & 1872

As Jim says, it's most likely 1870s. See these 70s backs. It's very similar to 2nd Row, 2nd from left:

Thank you! I am just starting to understand the scope and depth of information available on line with such professional and dedicated practitioners as ‘Gadget’ - today is my first foray into Rootschat!

From the evidence so far I agree the photograph was taken in the 1870s. It would be good to see any contemporary photographs of men in Scotland living in Inverness, Moray and Aberdeenshire in the 1870s to see  the prevailing fashions support this view.

Those of us who are involved in dating on this board have various reference books, etc. However, there aren't many websites that have good examples - and hardly any of regional variations.  The photo backs are a fairly good indication of the date the photo was taken, although sometimes these are used later to use them up.

Jim (above) and Carol on the thread that you mentioned have already dated the image as 1870s. I was reinforcing their dates with a dating of the back.
