Paul Eugene Fer court case
« on: Saturday 10 June 23 03:33 BST (UK) »
Dear fellow researchers - I am researching on behalf of a friend who has a family tree containing  Paul Eugene Fer (originally from Switzerland) who was a merchant. In February/March of 1921 he was charged, and bailed, over the death of William Henry Pool. The Fer family and the Poole family lived at Mapledurwell, Hampshire. Paul Fer was acquitted in July 1921.

I could not find any reference to the death of William Poole in newspapers, although his death is there in Hampshire burials. Since Paul Fer was originally charged with 'slaying' him, I would have expected something there, at least with Paul's court case and acquittal.

can anyone help?

There isn't much coverage for Hampshire newspapers online so perhaps you should contact the records office for a look up.  Details are under 'services'.

The death cert should give a cause of death.

thank you Debra!
I will see if I can get a look-up re the newspapers.

Considering the appetite for 'sensational' news, I was surprised that other county newspapers did not pick the story up.
Paul Fer also disappeared - that is, later records do not place him with his family, so I suspect he and his wife separated, and he could have gone abroad.

best wishes,
Louise

I agree, having searched newspapers at BNA and at newpapers.com, that it is very odd that there is no trace of this case to be found.

Anyway:
In 1939 Margaret M Fer dob 5/5/1888 is at 117 Upper Tollington Park, Haringey, with Yvonne M. and René E W. She is registered as a widow.

The same person (address and dob match) is on the passenger list of the Stirling Castle, bound for South Africa. She is 'Single' (includes widowed) and gives her citizenship as Swiss.

Electoral registers from 1930 onwards record Margaret Maud Fer as either by herself or with children until 1959 when she passed away. No show of Paul Eugene from 1921 onwards.

Can anyone view this record on FindMyPast to rule out?
