Hi All; I'm looking to trace the forebears of my relatives Henry Slater and Catherine Williamson, married in Peterhead, Aberdeenshire in 1862.
I have some names of their children, in particular, sons James Patterson Slater (my GG) and his brother Alexander Tait Slater, but I'm struggling to find any history further back than Henry and Catherine. They appear on a Census in 1871 (I think), as residents of Guestrow, Peterhead.
Documentary and oral family history has JPS as most definitely a Scot, but remember his Mother Catherine as Irish, however, I've found some evidence for Henry suggesting he was the Irish connection, born in Dublin. The parents of this Irish Henry are Nicholas Slater and Mary Hefferen– but they don't seem to fit the known family history and DNA evidence, with a Nicholas and Mary resident in Liverpool some years later.
There is also oral family history of a travelling community in Scotland, but I don't know how this dovetails into Henry and Catherine ... so, in short, I'm stumped!
Any help / hints as to how I should proceed and/or where to look for clues would be gratefully received and faithfully applied – thanks in advance, Jim.
