Great Great Grandmother Unknown Parents
« on: Sunday 11 June 23 16:56 BST (UK) »
Hello,
I haven't been able to find the parents of Sarah Ann Smith (1849-1927) because she has such a common surname.
However Sarah married Edmund Elgar in 1871, and on the 1881 census they have a daughter on there who I can't trace a birth record for- Jessie Elgar born 1870. I don't know if Jessie is Sarah's or Edmund's previous wife's child (Mary Ann Lockett), they already had a known son together in 1868: Robert Elgar.
I think the last attempt I can make to find Sarah's parents is trying to find Edmund or Jessie on the 1871 census, which I haven't been able to do, to see if Jessie is with Edmund. If not, she might be with Sarah and since she wasn't married, maybe Sarah lived with her parents still?
Thanks to anyone who has a look,

(Edmund was born in 1845 in Romford, Jessie born 1870 in Kennington, Sarah born in ''City Road'', Islington?)

The only marriage I can find was in 1876???

Edmund Elgar, widower, married Sarah Ann Smith, aged 27, spinster, daughter of Robert Smith, warehouseman. They both lived at 65 High Street, Kingsland.

(sorry I made a mistake with the marriage date, it was 1876)
Thank you for confirming the mother Cas, for some reason the only birth for Elgar mmn Lockett that comes up for me on FindMyPast is Robert's birth.
Thanks Queenie, I've been trying to find her parents for ages!
The death for Mary Ann Lockett looks like it's the right one.
thanks again,  :)

I want to also add that a witness to Sarah's marriage was a Thomas Smith, and I was thinking that this might be a brother.

Then I found a Sarah Ann Smith, born 1848 (baptised 1853 in Shoreditch), daughter of Robert and Elizabeth Smith:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NLVB-ZYL

This couple also had a son called Thomas, born in 1854.

They are in Hoxton Old Town in 1861; Robert is a Manchester Warehousman, born c.1822 in Whitechapel, whilst Elizabeth was born c.1817 in St. Luke's. Sarah and Thomas are with them.

1851 census:

Thank you Osprey  :)

Looking at the 1851 census, there is a Sarah Smith born 1849 with a Dad called Robert Smith who's a Warehouseman. I think I can assume this is her... It also says she was born in St Luke's which is in Islington like I thought. (Just seen your message Queenie, I agree)

Still haven't found Edmund, Mary (or not if she'd died), Robert and Jessie in 1871, but I did find Robert Elgar living in 1881 at 12 with some family members in Wiltshire, Robert and Jessie could possibly be with other family in 1871 if Mary had died?  ???

Thanks again,
