DM/X as part of service number
« on: Sunday 11 June 23 20:51 BST (UK) »
Could anyone enlighten me as to what D/MX means in front of or as part of a service number?

I was thinking of applying for my fathers records - he was in the Royal Navy, and on some documents I have, this is written. I also have a photo of him with what looks like a kit bag, and the same letters and numbers are on the bag.

Just wondering if I needed to quote these letters as well as the numbers on the application.

Sorry nothing to do with Dominion of Canada, Merchant Seamen or Royal Naval Reserve.

D/MX is indeed part of an RN service number. There were 4-6 numerals after it.

D indicates the ratings Home Port Divison, in this case Devonport.
M indicates his trade: Artificer, Electrical, Supply or other [other than Seaman, Stoker, Comms etc].
X was added in a pay restructure post 1925.

Thank you, Hugh, this is most helpful. Dad finished his Navy career as a leading sick berth attendant
