Brick wall on death records for 2x Great Grandparents.
« on: Monday 12 June 23 02:11 BST (UK) »
Hello, I wonder if anyone could help at all?

My newly found cousin once-removed and I have spent quite a while trying to find death records for my 2xggparents (her ggp).  It seems strange because we have found lots of documentation of their lives, more than any other ancestors, but no deaths show up on the index for Aaron, and nothing seems to fit for Sarah Ann.  Sarah Ann's death could probably be found by purchasing multiple certificates in a trial and error fashion, but I don't know what to do for Aaron.  I've tried multiple spellings and also tried using his birth surname - I don't know if his change of surname would have been legally recorded.

Aaron Eames - b. 4 NOV 1853 • Brighthelmston, Sussex, England (born Aaron Bungard we have deduced). Info found in censuses 1861/71 (Bungard) and 1881/91 (Eames) where birthplaces tally.  His marriage cert where he is called Eames states father as John Eames, we believe that to be his step father.  We have lots of supplemental evidence for him, mainly in catholic baptism records for himself and Sarah Ann (who were adult baptisms once married) with the name Eames, and some of their children, also Eames.  Aaron's daughter's marriage cert (1912) shows Aaron Eames as deceased.

Sarah Ann Frogley - b. 6 NOV 1855 • Witley, Surrey, England (became Sarah Ann Eames as seen on marriage cert 1874).  Ancestry censuses 1861-1911 and Findmypast 1921 census all tally.  1911 and 1921 census marked as widowed (still named Eames), and we don't know what happened to her after that.

They lived in Stockwood Street, Battersea, London (Wandsworth) (17 sources), 1885-1902 when Sarah Ann became head according to the electoral roll, with Aaron missing from 1901 census with nothing to show he is deceased.  He was on the electoral roll in 1901.

They had 10 children, one who was also called Aaron who died at 29 yrs (EAMES, JAMES AARON 29 GRO Reference: 1904 S Quarter in WANDSWORTH Volume 01D Page 437 ).  Just adding that to help rule that one out.

Any help or pointers would be gratefully received.  Thank you.

Hi,
Do you have a Public Tree on Ancestry?   There is a lot of info recorded there , much tying in with your post.

If not, you can see it here;

Thank you Alan, mine is the North-South (formerly Lancashire Roots) tree.  My cousin's is the May/Miller family tree.  We haven't found any other users who have broken ground on any of this, or who haven't been confused about Aaron Eames vs James Aaron Eames, his son.

Keep in mind the information for Electoral Registers was gathered the year before in time to be printed

for 1901.  So Aaron was alive 1900 and probably died late 1900 or early 1901.

Either that or he left for parts unknown.
---------
They had 9 children 5 were alive 1911 and 4 were deceased.

-----------------
Sarah Ann entered the workhouse 27 November 1920 initially in the infirmary and was still there for the 1921 census. Charwoman  out of work aged 65
Address is  -- 35 West Hill in Wandsworth -1911 34 St Ann's Hill Wandsworth

What about the Sarah J Eames aged 67 death registered Wandsworth 1921?
Middle initial is wrong though

If there is a chance she died in the workhouse, where would her burial take place?

Check cemetery records?

Do you know if Aaron fought in the Boer War? There is a vague reference to the death of an A Eames in the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902) source:
GRO Natal & South African Forces Death (1899 To 1902)
It shows this man as having been in 1 Dragoon Guards.

Very possibly not him, but just an idea seeing as no trace of his death in England.

FindMyPast Boer War indexes show Albert Eames and Arthur Eames in 1st (King's) Dragoon Guards  :-\

The marriage of Elizabeth Mary Eames in 1903 shows her father as James Aaron Eames, deceased, Stoker.

Sarah was still in the workhouse 4 March 1929
Creed Register

Discharged to St James Hospital (previously called the workhouse infirmary!)
A+D register

From the creed register, I think she has come back the same day. And see the previous page of the A+D register

In all likelihood Sarah stayed in the system, or new system (with the workhouses being called public assistance institutions)

Death
March 1935 Battersea 1d 370
Eames, Sarah Ann
Age 78

Buried in a Wandsworth cemetery, 4 January 1935

29 April 1901
We have a Wandsworth exam relating to Edward Eames (7) and his mother Sarah Ann Eames

Sarah says Aaron deserted her in 1900
Aaron was carrying on with another woman :o
