There are four records of Peoples monuments there plus Matilda Nickle, nee Peoples
I have tried to work them out, albeit, "will the right James Peoples please stand up". In other words, rather confusing.
Clarification of some family members recorded on grave head-stones
The adjacent typed text extract of monumental inscriptions was forwarded as being entries of some graves in the Kilwaughter Old Castle grounds. They offer a number of graves with Peoples’ family members interned.
Record 1:
George Peoples (c1814 to 1821-1891) was a son of James Peoples and Margaret Legge. He buried his son George Junior on 27 Aug 1851, aged 3. In 1854, along with his wife and three additional children, they emigrated to Lee County, Illinois.
Record 2:
The second grave monument was erected by Mary Peoples of Killyglen, in memory of her beloved husband James Peoples, who died 21 Jul 1863, aged 62. This age confirms that he was James Peoples and Margaret Legge’s eldest son. He did marry (2) an unknown Mary. Their daughter Margaret was the same, who died on 8 Feb 1924, as also indicated by her brother in the second grave.
Record 3:
With the inscription of his sister Margaret, who died on 8 Feb 1924, matching the inscription on the grave above, the compiler suggests that this headstone was commissioned by James Peoples, the son of James Peoples and his second wife Mary. Calling himself Sen. indicates that he will also have a son called James Peoples. James did have a brother William J. Peoples (c1850-1927). This grave also records that this James Peoples died 12 May 1929, aged 87 (matches birth year of c1842) and in Holden, Larne.
Record 4:
This monument inscription may be an additional headstone erected by James Peoples, to commemorative his grandparents Joseph and Margaret Peoples; however, his “uncles” may be mis-leading, unless we take into consideration the above 1851 Census, whereby his grandmother included another James Peoples as her son. This James Peoples’ father was James Peoples. We can confirm that his uncles were David, Archibald and Joseph and his aunty was Ellen, as was her daughter Ellen. He did have a cousin named James Peoples, who was also named in the above 1851 Census taken at his grandmother’s home, in Killyglen.
Record 5:
Nickle – This grave commemorates the family of Matilda Nickle who married Hugh Nickle Senior, in 1871. She was the sister of Joseph Peoples who emigrated to Victoria.
Thus, the graves all have a connection to the Peoples’ family of Killyglen.
