Chambers, Moses
« on: Tuesday 13 June 23 03:58 BST (UK) »
Looking for the TOWN or PARISH that Moses Chambers (1768) his wife Jane (Campbell) Chambers (1771) are from in Tyrone.  They immigrated to New Brunswick, Canada in May 1819 with their children James (1796-), John (1798-), Mary (1804-) my 4th great-grandmother, Jane (1806-), Moses (1807-) and Ephraim (1811-).

The 1851 census for Sussex, Kings Co, New Brunswick, Canada states they immigrated from Tyrone in 1819.

I always try to get a bearing on the family by looking at the National Census for 1911 and then going back.  I do this on the basis that not every member of a family emigrated and those that were left may have maintained  the irish naming patterns.
https://youririshheritage.com/lessons/irish-naming-patterns/

The Irish naming pattern is as follows:

1st son is named after the father’s father.
2nd son is named after the mother’s father.
3rd son is named after the father.
4th son is named after the father’s eldest brother.

1st daughter is named after the mother’s mother.
2nd daughter is named after the father’s mother.
3rd daughter is named after the mother.
4th daughter is named after the mother’s eldest sister.

On the 1911 census there is an entry for a 78 year old Moses Chambers living in Sherrigrim which is a townland between Dungannon and Cookstown in Co Tyrone.  He is a protestant episcopalian & ag labourer.

He and his wife have been married for 53 years and have 3 living children from a family of 8

https://www.townlands.ie/tyrone/dungannon-middle/donaghenry/stewartstown/sherrigrim/

On the 1901 census there is a Moases Chambers (64) living in Sherrugrim with his wife, daughter Letita and grand-daughter Emily.
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Tyrone/Stewartstown/Sherrugrim/1732418/

There is also a 6 year old Moases Chambers who is the son of William Chambers who may be the son of Moases/Moses above.

So that states that some of the  Chambers family called Moses are still around in Tyrone.  Not sure if they are related to each other or to your family.

Griffiths Valuation is a census subsititute. In 1858 this was carried out  for Co Tyrone.

There are entries for Moses Chambers in the Townlands of Cavan, Tullymoan, Leckpatrick and Glentown in Co Tyrone. Not sure if it was the same person or several people called Moses Chambers.

In Cavan T/L and I think Leckpatrick T/L there are a couple of Campbell families (James & John) and well as Moses Chambers.

I am not sure how all these townlands lie relation to each other or if any march the others.

The Moses Chambers in the census dies in 1911 aged 80.....ages can jump around a little. His death was reported by a daughter Alice McCracken

Here is an 1858 Moses Chambers marriage...father is shown as uncertain.

On FS there is an index record of a probate of 1813 of Moses Chambers of Stewartstown.  I wonder did the impetus to move to Canada come from the need to share a legacy from a father around several beneficiaries.

This is the grave record of the above who was a Rev'd Chambers and 32 years, married to Matilda.  Maybe a cousin of your Moses?

Beware though every record will need to be carefully checked as there were a few Moses Chambers around then in Co Tyrone and other nearby Counties. There seem to be a few in Canada as well that may or may not be related to your Moses.
