James Archbell - 1798 - 1866
« on: Tuesday 13 June 23 15:01 BST (UK) »
I would be very pleased to have your opinion as to how old James was in the first of these pictures.  The second picture, I believe, is of James when he was Mayor of PMB within the period of late 1850's/early 1860's and certainly after he ceased being a Missionary.  I have another photograph of James as Mayor with his councillors and that is dated 1861.

I've got that photograph as well, but I can't remember where I got it from - probably via my friend in SA.  I'll ask her.

Are you sure that they are the same chap? The top one may be in his 60s, and I think the second one looks to be in his 70s.

Second photo not terribly clear but he looks balding, and with different whiskers from the first chap. I realise if years had passed he could have lost hair, but didn’t men tend keep the same style once they got older? I think eye shape looks different.  :-\

Thanks for the comment, Ruskie.  I'll go back to the person who gave me the "younger" photograph and ask them to confirm the thought that this is James.

I think they could be the same man (eg same downturned mouth), with the first one maybe 10 years earlier.

From one of the dating books I have, I think the beard and clothing in the first would be consistent with the 1850s, but that might mean the second one was later into the 1860s. If it's been cropped from a larger picture, it would be quite helpful to see more of what he's wearing, and also the studio setting.
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson

Thank you very much.  I am sure that they are the same man.  James ceased being a Missionary in 1848 and concentrated on business etc. in PMB, where he was certainly the Mayor.

You mention "missionary" and "SA". This claims to be a picture of a James Archbell, SA.

Where was your James a missionary?
